eBay Find: $1,199.99 Or Best Offer

If you've got $1,199.99 plus $9.95 shipping lying around doing nothing, you could give it to me, or you could spend it on this lovely specimen. I'd rather you give it to me, but I'm a bit bias in that decision.

You are looking at a 1957 Swift Meats #7 - Nellie Fox card. It grades at 96 SGC. What a wonderful, expensive gift for a loved one. I, personally, am not a fan of graded cards. I believe you should let the cards breathe.

But for the White Sox fan who has the money to buy everything, you can get this for slightly over a grand. There's already one offer submitted, but it has been rejected. The potential buyer probably offered the hefty sum of a dollar.

I've never seen this card before, but it looks like Nellie needs a wee bit of assembly. But as long as you keep Mr. Fox in his disheveled state and encased in plastic, he should be worth over $1,000 for generations to come.

If you care to check the auction out, you can view it here. The seller also mentions that Nellie is a tough autograph since he died so young. It has absolutely nothing to do with the auction, since this card is not autographed to my knowledge. Nothing like ending the listing description with sunny material like an early death. Happy shopping!

2007 Legendary Cuts

I always like the Legendary Cuts sets from Upper Deck. This year's set is not up to their usual standards. It looks OK, but I liked the 2006 set much better.

One thing that keeps this set from being great is that it's too dark. Black and red is a nice color combo, but it drowns out the picture here. There's too little picture and too much black. The darkness also blurs the fine detail that Upper Deck put into the card. There's nice scrolling and a nameplate underneath the picture, but do you see it? All I see from this picture is a tarnished dark gold-greenish blob with specks of black. The red is used effectively, but it would've been more complimentary if it was contrasted against something a little lighter to get the details.

The Legendary Cuts sets are always difficult to complete in team sets. There is little info given as to which team a player is on until you actually see the card itself. I recently found a missing card to the 2006 team set that I thought I had completed back in May 2007. You just never know what team a player is going to pop up on. That being said, I think I've pieced together the White Sox team set list for 2007.

20 - Luis Aparicio
21 - Nellie Fox
22 - Luke Appling
108 - Nellie Fox (Legendary Lineage) /550
121 - Al Lopez (Legendary Lineage) /550
122 - Luis Aparicio (Legendary Lineage) /550
123 - Luke Appling (Legendary Lineage) /550

Luke Appling is a no brainer unless they used they used a picture of him on the minor league Atlanta Crackers. The others have a slight chance of not being on the White Sox. I'm sure of the regular printed base set 20,21, and 22, because I have those cards in hand.

C-Note Challenge

Hey, I made Beckett's C-Note Challenge in this month's issue! I know this isn't a White Sox card, but it's a rookie card of a White Sox legend!! How could I go wrong. I tried to pick from White Sox players that may get overlooked. Especially when they are on other teams on some of these cards.

The other cards in the list, reflect either cards that I've always liked or players that I've always liked that weren't part of the White Sox. The Nellie Fox Colts card is a personal favorite. The 1983 Topps Alfredo Griffin is the card that made me fall in love with collecting. The Fisk rookie card stands for everything I've ever wanted as a kid, but could never afford because I was only a kid.

Here's the list:

  • 1972 Topps #79 Fisk/Cooper $50.00
  • 2001 Topps Traded #T99 Ichiro/Pujols $15.00
  • 1996 Pinnacle Starburst Artist’s Proofs #141 Harold Baines $ 4.00
  • 1989 Classic Travel Orange #131 Ken Griffey Jr. $ 5.00
  • 1993 UD Then & Now #TN6 Ryne Sandberg $ 3.00
  • 1957 Topps #67 Chico Carrasquel $10.00
  • 1964 Topps #205 Nellie Fox $12.00
  • 2007 Finest Refractors #39 Jim Thome $ 0.75
  • 1983 Topps #488 Alfredo Griffin $ 0.15
  • 1986 Topps Traded #19T John Cangelosi $ 0.10
I think it's a pretty good variety of cards. It also reflects some of my tastes and highlights cards that I don't currently have. The Alfredo Griffin became damaged when I priced it at $1.00 on the back in black crayon shortly after I opened the pack in 1983. Hey, I was 6 and to me it was the coolest looking card in the pack. I also thought it was cool that real firemen played baseball. Like I said, I was 6 and didn't know the intricacies of a closer.

If anyone wants to donate a NM or MT copy of the 1983 Topps Alfredo Griffin, contact me through my eBay store Mercury's Space. I'll gladly accept a card donation through the mail.
