This is where things get a bit strange. Number 31 was down to two different White Sox players. LaMarr Hoyt and Hoyt Wilhelm. Both were pitchers, both wore 31 and both were named Hoyt.
LaMarr Hoyt won the Cy Young in 1983 for the Sox and is currently working in the White Sox organization as a roving instructor. He ultimately wasn't chosen because of his drug troubles after he left the White Sox and the short length of his dominance. It was a tough call, but I'm happy to report that he is drug-free now.
Hoyt Wilhelm was the first pitcher to save 200 games and the first to appear in 1,000 games. He is the Chicago White Sox Career Leader in WHIP (.935), Hits Allowed/9IP (6.19) and Strikeout to Walk (3.12). While LaMarr Hoyt had good numbers, he only had a few brilliant years. Hoyt Wilhelm didn't have great numbers at first glance, but his accomplishments appear more impressive when you dig into them.
The battle of Hoyts has been won by Hoyt Wilhelm. He will proudly wear the number 31 for the White Sox. See, I told you it was going to be a bit strange.
