Dinged Corners Challenge: 3 On Card Autos

I have many autographs in my collection. Not as many as some people, but a fair share. I will share three that I obtained before autographs were included in products.

1990 Topps - Frank Thomas
I bought this after a signing at Chicago Ridge Mall when Frank was there for a signing in his rookie year. The shop always had the signers autograph extra to sell at the shop later. I took one look at the lines for Frank and decided it would be a wise move to come back after the signing to get my autograph. One of the best decisions I ever made!

1990 Upper Deck - Carlton Fisk
The same shop had a Fisk combo autographed card and ball. I saved up and purchased this shortly after the Frank Thomas.

1985 Donruss - Harold Baines
The card was picked up at a card show in 1995. I was rifling through the autographed cards, just to see if they had anything interesting. I had stopped collecting, but my friend thought it would be fun to attend a show at the local K of C. I came with no shopping agenda, but I saw this card cheap and snatched it up. I added an autographed ball about ten years later and tracked down a ball/card display holder and that is how it has stayed.

Other cards that were considered.

1993 Upper Deck - Jason Bere
1989 Topps - Andre Dawson
1990 Leaf - Shawn Boskie

All were cards that I picked up in my youth, before an autograph was expected out of a pack.

10 Questions From Dinged Corners

Round One

1-If I didn't collect baseball cards, I'd collect album artwork.
I always found album artwork fascinating. There are so many little things that one can do with an album cover. It is an art form that is sadly dying today.

2-My baseball heroes include one you probably wouldn't know from my blog or comments, and that person is John Paciorek.
To think what he accomplished in one day is mind boggling.

3-Every New Years I resolve to add to my collection.
Truthfully, I resolve that every single day.

4-If I could spend a day with one person from baseball history, it would be Bill Veeck.
The stories he could tell could make my head explode!

Round Two

1-What is your favorite kind of dog? Cairn Terrier
I belong to the Chicago/Suburban Cairn Terrier Club because of the elderly, disabled man I took care of for almost five years. Toto was a Cairn Terrier.

2-Who is your favorite baseball player? Harold Baines
Harold Baines squeaks out Carlton Fisk here because he was scouted by the White Sox when he was 12 years old.

3-What is your favorite team? Chicago White Sox
Hence the name of the blog, but I enjoy watching most teams.

4-What is your favorite baseball movie? Major League
The little moments are so true that it's scary... and funny!

5-What is your favorite baseball book? The Baseball Hall Of Shame
I've been reading this series of books since I was a kid. A great fountain of knowledge.

6-What is your favorite card? 1985 Topps #275 Harold Baines (FDP)
This was one of my chase cards for the 1985 season. I loved the way Topps used the old school photo of Harold.

Contest Winning At Dinged Corners

Winning contests seems to be the only fun I have lately. Dinged Corners had a contest, in which you had to think like Lucy, or at least come up with something funny about a 1989 Topps Tommy Lasorda card.

I couldn't match wits with Lucy. I came up with comments about running to the bathroom and ordering from the lunch truck. I guess the comments made Lucy or Patricia laugh, because I just received 10 hand selected cards from Lucy, in the today's mail.

Not only did I receive Lucy's Ten, I got many bonus cards and a bonus unopened pack of cards. Patricia and Lucy are always so generous when it comes to cards. On top of that, I got another great drawing from Lucy! That's always the best thing about the packages from Patricia and Lucy, the personal touches.

Bonus pack:
1 pack of The Baseball Enquirer

WOW! I got a lot more knocked off my want list, surprisingly. I sent a package out to Patricia and Lucy over a month ago, which is somewhere in limbo. It hasn't shown up at their place and it hasn't shown up back at mine either. Hopefully, someday the cards will show up. I am going to try sending another package out. I'm hoping for this weekend. I've been setting aside cards featuring smiles, technology, aerial acrobatics, Mets, Asian players and more.

Thank you both for the wonderful selection of cards! I will be opening up the pack of Baseball Enquirer cards on A Pack A Day, within the next few days. As always, Lucy's drawings rock!

Yes, Lucy, I loved the card with the sunglasses and the action shots! All the cards were great!
