Card #18 - Eddie Smith
Eddie once again made the All-Star team. He did not get an opportunity to get in the game though. Spud Chandler of the New York Yankees started the game. Al Benton of the Detroit Tigers took over pitching duties in the bottom of the fifth, since Chandler was pinch hit for by Bob Johnson of the Philadelphia Athletics in the top of the fifth.
Benton finished out the game for a four inning save, as the American League was victorious, three to one. Cleveland Indians' shortstop Lou Boudreau hit a lead off home run in the top of the first, but Tigers first baseman Rudy York's two-run blast in the same frame was the deciding factor, scoring Yankees right fielder Tommy Henrich. Both homers came off of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mort Cooper.
