#1 - Jim Landis
Jim's only competition was Lance Johnson. Jim edged out Lance because of his 5 gold gloves and his 1962 All-Star appearance. Jim also played in a World Series and he didn't have to be traded from the White Sox to do it.
Jim is still a fan favorite in Chicago. He figures prominently in White Sox advertising, when the subject of the 1959 team is the focus. I couldn't find an example of a card that showed Jim's uniform number being #1. I guess you'll just have to take my word on it.
