A Sobering Celebration

Nick Adenhart was thoughtlessly killed by a drunk driver on April 9, 2009. Some may find it in poor taste to celebrate the clinching of the AL West division by drenching Adenhart's jersey with champagne and beer on September 28, 2009. Just saying.

Nick deserves better than this, don't you think?

At first sight I agreed with you completely. The more I thought about it though, I'm sure his teammates cared about him a great deal, were just caught up in the moment, and weren't thinking about the irony here.

Actually, I thought there wasn't much to it until I read this...

"He's our teammate," third baseman Chone Figgins said. "We're allowed to do what we want."

That tells me that they weren't caught up in the moment.

From what I heard, his teammates were acting like he was right there celebrating with them, knowing they would be drenching him with champagne,as all baseball celebrations go.It was a tribute to him, more than condemning the circumstances of his tragic death. That was a very poor choice of words on Figgin' part.

I completely understand the reasoning behind it, I just think it was in poor taste considering the circumstances of his death and how recently it occurred.

I had the same thoughts that it seemed a little odd, but at the same time it was done as a tribute to a friend and teammate. These guys have had a ton of emotions running through them in regards to Nick, so in the end it was up to them to release those emotions how they choose to.

I have very little problem with the celebration. My bigger concern would be how many of these guys drank champagne, beers, etc that night and then climbed into vehicles. I'd like to hope that the team had something in place to avoid that.

I am with RWH, I am concerned about it right now as I watch the Phils celebrate on tv. I hope that the entire league as measure in place, but even if they do, I am sure that there is at least 1 player in every bunch that feels the need to drive himself somewhere.
