30 Day Horror Challenge: Day 10

Psychological horror is becoming more prevalent since Silence Of The Lambs won an Oscar. Some films don't seem like a horror film until you actually watch it. They aren't marketed as a horror film, but unspeakable horrors await for the viewer.

Your favorite psychological horror film.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Scoff if you will, but I consider A Clockwork Orange to be a horror film. It does start of nice and innocent. A bunch of lads hanging out at the milk bar looking for trouble, but there is an undercurrent of violence and sadistic behavior just beneath the surface.

The rape of a woman while singing "Singin' In The Rain" is juxtaposed in a chilling way. Eventually, the main character, Alex, is sent to prison after his victim dies from injuries sustained in the attack. Once there, he volunteers for a program that will allow for his early release. Using torturous experimental techniques, his penchant for violence is stripped from his being and a mild mannered Alex is set free onto the world.

Finding himself ostracized from his friends and family, the tables turn on Alex and he becomes the victim. The psychological horror that Alex is forced to endure has him going from one extreme to the other. It's a chilling look at the limits of the brain and the individual, from the lens of Stanley Kubrick.
