Gary Peters really is the best choice for number 43. Other names that appeared with number 43 on their uniform include Carlos Castillo, Ramon Garcia, Bob James, Herbert Perry, Adam Peterson and Bob Zupcic. So, you see, this was really an easy choice.
Gary was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1963. He was on the White Sox for 3 games in 1961, then from 1963 until 1969. He made the All-Star game in 1964 and in 1967. Gary led the AL in ERA in 1963 and in 1966. He also led the league in wins in 1964.
It's not hard to see why Gary was in the top ten in MVP voting in 1963, 1964 and 1967. He was one of the great, mostly forgotten pitchers that the Sox had an abundant amount of in the 60's. They led a team of almosts for the majority of the 60's. If there had been divisional play before 1969, the White Sox would've made it to the playoffs a few times during that decade.
Gary is the best White Sox player to wear number 43. It will be tough to edge Gary out of this spot, but I hope someone does eventually. Not because I don't think Gary is deserving, but because I want to see the Sox players get better each year. Whoever may replace Gary on this list will have an almost insurmountable task ahead of them.
