The Fleer Sticker Project Contest Winnings

There is a deep, dark secret that I must share with you. I am a Seattle Pilots fan. I wasn't alive during the team's existence, but I always found it strange that a team would last for only one year before moving on. Something about that seems odd. Armed with this information, I won a contest over at the Fleer Sticker Project.

After a series of mishaps, mostly weather related, I received my Fleer stickers in the mail on Monday. I found more than I bargained for, which is why this post is slightly delayed. I've been trying to figure out the years of each sticker that I won. My hat is off to Jon. I don't know where he digs this information up, but it is outstanding!

This is what I've figured out so far.

1981 Fleer White Sox hat/Chicago lettering sticker
1982 Fleer White Sox logo sticker
1983 Fleer White Sox hat/Sox lettering sticker
1985 Fleer White Sox jersey/pennant Chicago Sox lettering sticker
1986 Fleer White Sox logo/pennant sticker (Eddie Collins back)
1986 Fleer White Sox logo sticker (Honus Wagner back)
1988 Fleer White Sox ball logo in holder sticker (2)
1988 Fleer White Sox/Cardinals logos/labels sticker
1989 Fleer White Sox logo sticker
1990 Fleer White Sox logo sticker
1991 Fleer White Sox logo sticker
1991 Fleer White Sox/Orioles/Red Sox/Angels logo sticker
1991 Upper Deck White Sox hologram logo sticker

This is what I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly. Some of the guessed information comes from sleuthing at Jon's Fleer Sticker site.

1 cloth logo sticker - red circle background, black shoes on batter - 1970 or 1971?
1 cloth logo lettering sticker - current lettering logo in blue and 60's style lettering logo with blue background - late 60's?
1 Grand Slam hi-gloss sticker - logo plus 3-D lettering with pink background and puzzle back - late 70's or early 80's?
1 sticker - 60's style lettering logo on red background and Chicago lettering 70's style in blue with puzzle back - 70's?
1 sticker - late 70's/early 80's style Sox lettering on blue background and Chicago lettering 70's style in blue with puzzle back - 70's?
1 sticker with 60's style logo lettering with red background and current Sox logo lettering in red - 60's or 70's?

Any help? I appreciate all of them. They will all be given a good home with me. The cloth stickers are especially cool! Thanks Jon! Your site continues to amaze me. And here is further proof that contests are so easy that even I can win! So, check these things out and enter!

Steve,

I'm glad to see you received the stickers!

Like you, I am fascinated by the Pilots saga. I've been reading a book I recently picked up on Amazon about the team:

http://www.amazon.com/1969-Seattle-Pilots-Baseballs-One-year/dp/0786427868/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202826721&sr=8-1

It is very interesting to see how the team came to be in existence. Basically as a result of Charley Finely moving the Kansas City A's to Oakland, the AL was forced to expand by 2 teams as a lawmaker from Missouri threatened to push to have Baseball's Anti-Trust exemption removed if KC did not get another team immediately. Rather than risk losing their exemption, the AL agreed to add 2 teams with one obviously in KC and the other being Seattle.

I have to applaud you on your detective work. You are correct on all of your identifications!

For those stickers still in question, here are the answers:

Cloth logo sticker - red circle background, black shoes on batter - Bonus Points for the noticing the black shoes! Somebody has been reading the Quiz Card postings. Yes, this comes from either 1970 or 1971, or possibly even later. The cloth patches are very difficult to date as they were released from 1969 - 1975 with many variations for each team popping up along the way. The White Sox logo sticker didn't change too much during this time, so that is why it may actually be from the mid 70's. I can't say for sure.

The cloth logo lettering sticker - current lettering logo in blue and 60's style lettering logo with blue background - this is from 1970 or 1971. There is actually a different lettering style on the bottom half of the sticker for the 1969 set, and in 1972 they switched to red.

Grand Slam hi-gloss sticker - logo plus 3-D lettering with pink background and puzzle back - this is from 1979. These stickers were released in 1977 (blank back), 1978 (with 1977 World Series puzzle on the back) and 1979 (with 1978 World Series puzzle on the back). I'm pretty sure I sent the 1979 version.

Sticker - 60's style lettering logo on red background and Chicago lettering 70's style in blue with puzzle back - I'm pretty sure this is is the 1979 version as well.

Sticker - late 70's/early 80's style Sox lettering on blue background and Chicago lettering 70's style in blue with puzzle back - this is from 1982. The 1982 stickers have a puzzle of the 1981 All Star Game on the back.

Sticker with 60's style logo lettering with red background and current Sox logo lettering in red - this is from the Grand Slam hi-gloss sticker set in 1977 which has a blank back.

I'm glad to see these White Sox stickers have found a good home. Thanks for the kind words about the site.

Best book about the Seattle Pilots - or baseball for that matter - Jim Bouton's Ball Four.
